Community is what we do!
Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS) supports community and charitable organisations operating in the Vale of Glamorgan and manages three community buildings. If you require a community space in Llantwit Major or Penarth for exercise classes, choir practice, meetings or even office space, our buildings could meet your needs.

Spread the Word in Your Community: Carers Wales are recruiting Volunteer Champions
Carers Wales are currently recruiting volunteer Community Champions. As a Community Champion, you will help connect carers to valuable support and information by distributing Carers Wales materials (leaflets, factsheets, posters) across your local community, and host information stands in community spaces. Raising awareness across your community, will help us to reach more unpaid carers in Wales and make them aware of the support and services available to them.

Warning to vaccinate young children against flu, ahead of winter
Public health experts in Wales are encouraging parents to vaccinate young children against the flu virus this autumn, to protect them from getting secondary infections. Last winter nearly 800 children aged 2-16 years old were in hospital with flu, 78 per cent of whom were admitted due to flu.

New pathology sample statistics show pandemic impact on cancer diagnoses and ongoing recovery
Cancer detection rates are recovering more slowly for some cancers than others, according to a new analysis of pathology samples by the Wales Cancer Intelligence and Surveillance Unit (WCISU) at Public Health Wales. Detection of prostate cancer was nearly 20 per cent lower in 2022 than in 2019, and lung cancer was nearly five per cent lower in the same period.
The current and future health of children in Wales is being harmed by the cost of living crisis
Public health experts are calling for urgent action to tackle the impact of the cost of living crisis on the health and well-being of children in Wales. A new report published today by Public Health Wales finds that the health of children, especially those already living in poverty, is being harmed by the cost of living crisis. These health harms will have negative knock-on effects on children’s future health and life chances.
Two thirds of year 10 pupils who vape daily show signs of nicotine dependency.
A snapshot survey of pupils in years 7 and 10 from a small sample of Welsh secondary schools has found that the proportion of year 10 pupils using vapes every day is around nine to 10 per cent. Among these daily vapers around two thirds showed signs of moderate or high dependency to nicotine using a validated measure.

The fund is available until March 2025, and you can apply for up to £250,000 towards buying or leasing a local asset or helping to pay for renovation work on it.

The latest government budget cuts and current cost of living situation will affect services across the Vale of Glamorgan. GVS is looking to collate information on how this will affect/has affected third sector organisations and services.

Third Sector Capital Fund 2023
The Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan Regional Partnership Board has allocated £150,000.00 funding from the Welsh Government’s Housing with Care Fund (HCF), to support new third sector community services in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The Third Sector Capital Fund is open for applications from Tuesday, 5th September 2023, with a deadline for submission of 12pm on Friday, 29th September 2023.
