At the age of 92, Mary O’Connell is still a very mobile and independent woman. The Birchgrove resident is able to look after herself at home, get up and down the stairs with relative ease and socialise. She firmly believes she owes much of her good health and mental sharpness to her Elderfit class which she attends every Monday at Maes Y Coed Community Centre in Heath, Cardiff. The classes, which are growing in popularity, help the pensioner maintain her strength, balance and coordination.

Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS) supports community and charitable organisations operating in the Vale of Glamorgan and manages three community buildings. If you require a community space in Llantwit Major or Penarth for exercise classes, choir practice, meetings or even office space, our buildings could meet your needs.

Carers Wales are currently recruiting volunteer Community Champions.  As a Community Champion, you will help connect carers to valuable support and information by distributing Carers Wales materials (leaflets, factsheets, posters) across your local community, and host information stands in community spaces. Raising awareness across your community, will help us to reach more unpaid carers in Wales and make them aware of the support and services available to them.

When dad-of-one Mark Canning began suffering with sickness and diarrhoea, it was thought he had gastric flu and was advised by his GP to rest and keep his fluid intake up. But in the days that followed his stomach pains became increasingly severe and he was advised to visit his nearest emergency department.

Public health experts in Wales are encouraging parents to vaccinate young children against the flu virus this autumn, to protect them from getting secondary infections. Last winter nearly 800 children aged 2-16 years old were in hospital with flu, 78 per cent of whom were admitted due to flu.

This event will be delivered by the Bevan Commission, Wales’ leading independent health and care think tank. During this event, we will talk through the challenges that the health and social care sector is facing, and your thoughts on how things could be improved and sustained in the future.

This event will introduce you to the signs and risk factors of gambling harms and the process into treatment, we will also be discussing a Domestic Homicide Review that had a connection with gambling and opening up a discussion to get your thoughts on this. This awareness event will leave you feeling more secure in your knowledge of gambling harms and Domestic Abuse, and how to help someone either in your personal or work life who is struggling with this topic.
