Volunteer Blood Bike Rider

Blood Bikes Wales (BBW) is a free motor bike courier service to the NHS and NHS related organisations.
Operating 365 days (weather permitting) throughout the whole of Wales.

We are reliant 100% on Volunteers to keep the wheels turning!

The riders are the most visible part of this organisation operation. They are the ones who interact with their service users in a face-to-face setting. Riders need to hold an advanced qualification before we they can ride a Blood Bike.

 What do I need to become a Rider?

  • Be over the age of 25

  • You must have held a category “A” licence for more than 2 years

  • Have no more than 6 points on your licence

  • You must hold an advanced riding qualification, for example

1.      IAM RoadSmart (IAM)

2.      RoSPA Advanced Riders

3.      ERS (Enhanced Rider Scheme -A/All Green)

BBW may, in certain circumstances, consider alternative qualifications that demonstrate an equivalent standard of advance riding

You need to pass

  • An in-house assessment on a liveried Blood Bike.

  • A GMP assessment (allowing you to carry and transport blood, blood by products , samples , human donated milk etc.)

 Becoming a Blood Bike rider isn’t about riding fast – it’s about:

  • Supporting the NHS

  • A willingness to help

  • Advanced riding, safety and control

  • Trustworthiness

  • Professional conduct, both on and off the bike

We can guide you to a range of trusted organisations to help you to become a Blood Bike rider. 

By joining us you can start making a real difference straight away while working towards your rider status. There are many ways to support the charity whilst on your journey to becoming a rider.

Time commitment:  Time commitment is negotiable with the organisation.
Expenses reimbursed: Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Training provided: Full training is provided.
Selection procedure: Informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references and a disclosure and barring check (cost met by organisation).
