Our approach to Artificial Intelligence
Glamorgan Voluntary Services (GVS) recognises that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing how people and organisations work. Used well, AI has the potential to save time, improve accessibility, support learning and help voluntary and community organisations make better use of limited resources.
We want to explore these opportunities responsibly. Our approach reflects our organisational values and the principles set out in the Welsh Government’s AI Cymru: Shaping a Smarter, Fairer, More Prosperous Wales, including fairness, transparency, inclusion, human oversight and ensuring that technological progress benefits people and communities.
How we use AI
GVS may use AI tools to support activities such as research, administration, analysing information, generating ideas, drafting and improving content, and developing or improving services.
AI is a tool to support our staff, not a substitute for their knowledge, professional judgement or relationships with the people and organisations we work with. Staff remain responsible for the work they produce and for decisions made by GVS.
Our use of AI is guided by the following principles:
People and communities come first. AI will support rather than replace meaningful human interaction. We will not rely solely on AI to make significant decisions affecting individuals, volunteers, staff or organisations.
Human oversight and accuracy. AI can produce inaccurate, incomplete or biased information. Relevant outputs will therefore be reviewed by people, and important facts, advice and sources checked before they are relied upon or published.
Privacy and security. We will protect personal, sensitive and confidential information and use AI in accordance with data protection law and our information governance requirements. Information will only be shared with AI systems where appropriate safeguards are in place.
Fairness, inclusion and accessibility. AI should help make our work more accessible and inclusive, not create new barriers. People will not be required to use AI to access GVS services.
Proportionate and sustainable use. We recognise the wider ethical and environmental impacts associated with AI. We will use it where it adds genuine value rather than simply because the technology is available.
Supporting the voluntary sector
As an organisation supporting the voluntary and community sector, we will continue to develop our own knowledge, share learning and support organisations to build the confidence and skills needed to use emerging technologies safely and effectively.
AI technology will continue to develop. We will therefore keep our approach under review, learn from our experience and adapt our practices where necessary while maintaining the principles set out in this statement.
