Why the short breaks fund matters to unpaid carers
Many unpaid carers spend so much time looking after someone else that rest and leisure fall off the agenda. This fund is designed to change that by paying community groups and charities to create real opportunities for time away from caring responsibilities.
The scheme covers carers of every age, so projects aimed at young carers, working-age carers and older carers can all be considered. The stated aims are to support wellbeing, let carers enjoy time for themselves and cut the isolation that often comes with the role.
With funding from Welsh Government through the Regional Partnership Board, this is an opportunity to help unpaid carers of all ages take a much-needed break, support their wellbeing and enjoy time for themselves.
We welcome proposals shaped by what matters to carers, particularly those who face barriers to accessing a break. Opportunities could include group activities, days out, overnight stays or support to enjoy a hobby, helping carers feel connected and reducing isolation.
Funding is available in the following categories:
£500–£1,500 for small, established groups providing meals or activities.
Up to £5,000 to establish new groups or projects that directly support unpaid carers.
Up to £10,000 for larger groups delivering short break opportunities for unpaid carers.
