New Community Cinema for the rural Vale
Films are being shown throughout 2026 in a new community initiative for the rural Vale of Glamorgan.
Inspired by the late humanitarian Jo Cox, More in Common Llantwit Major is coordinating the pop-up cinema every month in 2026 thanks to the support of The CoOp’s Local Community Causes scheme and start-up funding from The More In Common Network, an initiative of The Jo Cox Foundation.
Run by local volunteers, the community cinema offers super affordable films without the need to travel significant distances and is the latest voluntary initiative from the first More In Common group here in Wales.
Since the first Great Get Together back in 2017, the group has run more than 100 community events, including Great Get Togethers every summer and winter honouring the community spirit of the late MP Jo Cox.
After establishing a free social cafe focused on connecting anyone experiencing loneliness in 2018, the group has linked up with community groups and local organisations to foster tolerance, champion kindness and celebrate diversity, from distanced events during the pandemic to initiatives with Glamorgan Cricket and other partners through the first of the UK’s More In Common Networks in Cardiff.
Film Nights: first three films of 2026
The 2026 season kicks off in January with the feel-good box office smash hit Bridget Jones Mad About The Boy (certificate 15+) on Saturday 31 January.
Inspired by real events linking Welsh mining communities during the Miners Strike and gay activists fighting intolerance in London, award-winning British film Pride (certificate 15+) follows as part of LGBTQ+ History Month on Saturday 31 February just ahead of St David’s Day.
In March the revelatory film Hidden Figures [certificate PG] celebrates the unsung trio of African- American women who crossed gender and racial lines to enable the first American to orbit the earth in 1962 - a pivotal moment in the Space Race (Saturday 28 March).
