Youth Justice & Early Support Service (YJESS) are looking for volunteers

GVS are working with YJESS to actively promote and take names of volunteers for the following opportunities. An earlier promotion as these are popular opportunities that only come around yearly.

YJESS are looking for volunteers who possess or are willing to develop the following skills and qualities:

  • Effective communication, including active listening

  • Ability to engage with young people

  • Committed to working with children and parents to prevent further offending

  • Integrity, discretion and commitment to confidentiality

  • Ability and commitment to work without prejudice

  • Ability to work with others to achieve a common aim

  • Commitment to working in a restorative manner

 Main Duties and Responsibilities
The role description refers to the principal duties and responsibilities of the role.  It does not necessarily list in detail all the tasks required to carry out these duties and responsibilities.

Restorative Meeting and Panel Facilitators

  • To facilitate restorative meetings including Referral Order Restorative Panels and Neighbourhood Resolution Panels

  • To initiate discussion within the restorative process between the child/young person, their parent/carer and/or victim

  • Work with others to contribute to the development of a ‘contract’ through the process of ‘co-production’

Intervention Delivery

  • To co-deliver interventions to children/young people and/or parent/carers with a YJESS Officer/Co-Ordinator

Appropriate Adult

  • To safeguard the rights and civil liberties of a child or young person (under 18 years old) who is detained by police

  • To ensure the young person’s physical and emotional welfare is protected

  • To ensure police procedures are carried out correctly

  • To be present with a young person during interview, processing, reading of rights and charging decisions

  • To accurately complete relevant paperwork and return in a timely manner to the YJESS

General

  • To actively engage in regular supervision and yearly appraisals

  • To actively engage in the giving and receiving of feedback

  • Maintain training and development in line with YJESS volunteer requirements and in conjunction with the Practitioner Manager

  • To provide flexible support, including that outside of normal office hours

Time commitment:  The suggested time commitment, days and hours will be negotiated with the organisation.  This will also include providing flexible support, including that outside of normal office hours.
Expenses reimbursed:
Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Training provided:
Full training is provided.
Selection procedure: Informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references and a disclosure and barring check (cost met by organisation).
