Restore the Thaw: A Meaningful Partnership to Support Local Communities and Biodiversity
In Partnership with Innovate Trust and Restore the Thaw
A new and exciting partnership has emerged between Restore the Thaw and Innovate Trust, supported by the Biodiversity Fund of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water. The project aims to provide meaningful volunteering opportunities for adults with learning disabilities and mental health support needs, while also enhancing the biodiversity along the River Thaw in the Vale of Glamorgan.
The River Thaw, which runs for 12 miles through the Vale of Glamorgan, begins near Llanharry, passes through Cowbridge, and flows out to the sea at Aberthaw. Once a much wider river, the Thaw used to support a diverse range of wildlife and plant life along its course. This new project aims to restore the natural habitat of the river, creating an environment where biodiversity can thrive once again.
A Collaborative Effort to Improve Local Biodiversity
This project is designed not only to improve the natural environment but also to provide valuable opportunities for people from the local community to engage with nature. Through hands-on activities like tree planting, wildflower planting, and wildlife surveys, volunteers will help restore and preserve the natural beauty of the River Thaw. The focus on volunteer involvement also ensures that the work is deeply rooted in the community, offering participants the chance to contribute to the health of their local environment.
Innovate Trust, which is dedicated to supporting and empowering adults with learning disabilities and mental health support needs, is thrilled to be part of this initiative. The partnership provides an excellent opportunity for participants to connect with nature while learning new skills, improving confidence and building relationships within their community. Innovate Trust’s mission is at the heart of this project, fostering educational, wellbeing, practical, and physical volunteering opportunities that encourage engagement with wildlife and plant life.
Volunteer Activities
The project will offer a range of activities, including:
Tree and Wildflower Planting
Wildlife and Plant Surveys
Wellbeing Walks
Educational Sessions
Litter Picks
Alongside these activities, volunteers will help with conservation-based maintenance work, such as:
Path Clearance and Footpath Management
Woodland Floor Clearance
Coppicing and Stream Clearance
Creation of habitat piles
These activities offer the chance to get involved in vital environmental work while also providing physical and mental health benefits through outdoor engagement.
Everyone is Welcome
What makes this project even more special is the inclusion of diverse groups of volunteers. Whether you're an employee volunteer looking for a team-building day out, a neurotypical volunteer offering the role of support, or an individual with learning disability or mental health support needs, everyone is encouraged to join in. Volunteers can participate with support or independently, depending on their individual needs.
This initiative is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for all, fostering a sense of community, connection, and accomplishment. It’s an opportunity for everyone to make a meaningful contribution to local conservation efforts while having fun in the great outdoors.
