New Mental Health Single Point of Access for Professionals Working with Young People

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has launched a new ‘Single Point of Access’ for professionals working with children and young people with emotional wellbeing or mental health challenges.

The new Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health Single Point of Access has been introduced to streamline processes and enhance access to services. The line can be accessed for advice on whether a referral to specialist services will meet an individual’s needs and for information on the wider support available. This will help professionals and the Health Board to ensure a child or young person is directed to the most appropriate services upon referral.

What does this mean for children and young people?

  • Directed to the most appropriate service the first time

  • Access to the right care to suit their individual needs

  • More efficient referral time

  • Professionals supporting them can access specialist advice from clinicians

What does this mean for professionals?

  • A new dedicated professional line for consultation to help best address a child or young person’s emotional wellbeing or mental health needs

  • Information on the support available for children and young people

  • Clarity on the information the Health Board needs to help direct children and young people to the most appropriate services

In some cases, a referral can be accepted over the phone via consultation, removing the need to submit a referral. You will be notified by the call handler if this is the case.

Refers may be GPs, social workers, health visitors, EU staff, school-based ALNCOs, educational psychologists, senior staff and school nurses. Other professionals making a referral may be people working in health services that work with children and young people, such as paediatricians, psychologists, dietitians, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and others.

For GPs submitting a referral via Welsh Admin Portal (WAP), you will now need to select ‘Children’s Emotional Wellbeing & Mental Health’ for the referral to reach the Single Point of Access team.

Professionals can now call 02921 836730, to speak to our team.

  • General or administrative queries, including speaking to caseholders – Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm

  • Professional consultation line – Monday to Friday, 10am – 2pm.

  • Potential crisis calls – Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm.

We value the experiences of professionals using this new system and want to ensure we can continue to optimise it based on feedback. Please take the time to complete this short survey.

Improving the emotional wellbeing & mental health of children and young people

We have also recently developed a brand-new website, co-produced with children and young people to offer useful information and resources on emotional wellbeing and mental health.

Visitors to the new website can find information about emotional wellbeing, mental health, services available and how to access them. There is also lots of advice and a range of useful resources signposted. All of the information on the website has been specially curated by healthcare professionals in partnership with young people.

Take a look at the new website focused on children and young people’s mental health.
