Independent Advocacy Supporting People Across the Vale of Glamorgan

Mental Health Matters Wales (MHM Wales) continues to deliver Independent Professional Advocacy (IPA) across the Vale of Glamorgan, ensuring that people receiving care and support are heard, informed, and empowered to make decisions about their lives.

Under the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014, the statutory role of an Independent Advocate is to help individuals who have difficulty understanding, retaining, or communicating information about their care and have no one appropriate to support them.

The service is free, confidential, and independent of local authorities, the NHS, and social services. Advocates support people to understand their rights, take part in assessments and care planning, access records, challenge decisions, and ensure their voices are central to all discussions affecting their wellbeing.

Karen Williams, Advocacy Manager at MHM Wales, said:

“Our advocates make sure people’s voices are heard from the very beginning of their care journey. Independent advocacy helps individuals understand their rights, express their wishes, and take an active role in shaping the support they receive.”

Anyone in the Vale of Glamorgan who feels they may benefit from advocacy can contact the team directly. Referrals can also be made by professionals or family members.
