Objective of fund:
One of the main reasons young people from disadvantaged backgrounds face greater challenges in accessing good work is fewer opportunities to develop the essential skills that are needed in employment. Skills development needs to be better integrated across the education and training system and youth support services, underpinned by robust evidence of effective approaches.
The Nuffield Foundation is supporting this agenda by launching a new fund to build high-quality evidence on how best to support those young people aged 16-24 who face significant barriers to work to develop essential employment skills and ultimately access good jobs. Under the new Essential Employment Skills Fund, the Nuffield Foundation is offering grants of up to £500k to evaluate UK programmes, share learning and inform the wider scaling-up of effective practice.

Aims
The primary aim of the programme is to improve the evidence on effective support for young people aged 16-24 facing significant barriers to work to develop essential employment skills and ultimately access good jobs.
To achieve this, we will support the rigorous evaluation of programmes addressing these aims and help them share their learning and practical ideas to support the scaling-up of effective practice and adaptation to different contexts.
Where funding is not available from other sources, we are also open to supporting the delivery costs of the programmes being evaluated.
Our ambition is that the programmes we fund will initiate or develop partnerships between stakeholders, which may include employers, educators, third sector providers, and local and regional government, to sustain support for young people.
We would also be interested in funding projects that aim to improve mechanisms for sharing learning or to advance approaches to measuring essential employment skills.
