Cardiff and Vale UHB Cardiac Surgeons host Francis Fontan Leadership Fellowship winner
Winner of the prestigious Francis Fontan Leadership Fellowship, Dr Nora Göbel, recently visited cardiothoracic colleagues at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to gain exposure to surgical leadership and knowledge and strengthen the global cardiothoracic community.
The Francis Fontan Leadership Fellowship is awarded by the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery (EACTS) and the Leadership Fellowship is championed by the European Women in Cardiothoracic Surgery and supported by the EACTS Council.
It aims to encourage and promote leadership development opportunities for senior female cardiac surgeons who are ready to embark on senior leadership roles.
Francis Fontan Fellowship scholarships are available to members around the world with the aim of supporting surgical education and fostering professional development through increased knowledge sharing.
The Fellowship equips them with a strong foundation and help develop core elements of leadership by visiting accomplished leaders and access wider networks in different countries. The experience, exposure, training, and expertise will help the Fellows to hone their skills, drive innovation and lead with confidence by widening their perspective.
Francis Fontan Leadership Fellowship award winners are able to choose which cardiac centres they visit from designated centres in Europe with leading female Cardiothoracic surgeons.
Dr Nora Göbel who is a senior Cardiac Surgeon from Robert Bosch Clinic in Stuttgart, Germany chose to visit Professor Indu Deglurkar, Cardiothoracic Consultant, at the University Hospital of Wales.
Dr Göbel said “It was an immensely rewarding and enriching experience I would not wish to miss. The exchange with Prof Deglurkar was not only professionally stimulating, but also deeply inspiring on a personal level.
“This fellowship provided a remarkable opportunity to learn from leading experts. The experience proved invaluable, allowing me to grow personally and develop the focus and resilience necessary to pursue my career aspirations with confidence.“
Professor Indu Deglurkar, Cardiothoracic Consultant at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “It was a pleasure to host Dr Göbel and I am deeply humbled by the peer recognition.
“The Department and Health Board welcomed her wholeheartedly. There was much to learn mutually from the exchanges and time spent together. I sincerely believe that Nora is well and truly ready to take on the responsibility of leading Cardiovascular services in Germany.
“This Fellowship creates a global community and helps Fellows to emerge with skills, techniques and supportive professional networks in a unique manner. There are two Fellowships awarded every year by the European Council and both the awardees have chosen to visit Cardiff this year.“
