Butterfly Conservation and Volunteering
Dot Williams, High Brown Fritillary Project Officer for Butterfly Conservation says
“Without the work of the volunteers, the high brown fritillary butterfly would not have survived in the Vale of Glamorgan, which is now the only place in Wales where the high brown fritillary lives.
Volunteers get involved throughout the Autumn/Winter months in helping with habitat management by coppicing trees and maintaining open spaces for the violets to grow. In the springtime, volunteers help with the habitat monitoring and in June/July, they help with counting the high brown fritillaries (and other butterflies).
Feedback from volunteers has shown how their sense of wellbeing benefits from getting in touch with nature and the also enjoy the social interaction that volunteering can bring. The volunteers have now formed a “curry club” and try to get out one evening a month for a social get together.”
