Live Well with Hearing Loss

The Live Well with Hearing Loss service supports people who are deaf, have hearing loss or tinnitus to access services, connect with their community and improve their knowledge around using devices.   Volunteer befrienders aged 18+ provide support and companionship to our service-users giving them a regular chance to chat or share some time to enhance their day.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Actively participate in all training and preparation to become a befriender

  • Phone service-users at a regular time each week for a period of 10 weeks, or write to a service-user on a regular basis, as agreed with the service-user and the Volunteer Co-ordinator

  • Provide essential companionship to service-users who may be lonely or socially isolated or unable to leave their home - this will make them feel valued and known

Time commitment: A suggested time commitment is 1 hour a week for telephone befriending. This has to be between the hours of 9am-4pm on a weekday at a time agreed by you, the service-user and the Volunteer Co-ordinator. Postal befriending is variable and flexible.

Expenses reimbursed: Volunteer out-of-pocket expenses are paid in line with organisational policy. However, all supplies for postal befriending will be provided so no further cost should be incurred. For telephone befriending, if you do not have inclusive minutes which you are able to use, we are able to lend a basic mobile phone for the sole purpose of your volunteering.
Training provided: Full induction and training is provided.  There will be regular one-to-one support sessions for all volunteers with the Volunteer Co-ordinator which will take place within office hours. There may be occasional mandatory refresher training. You may also be invited to attend volunteer social events or events to highlight the project at which attendance is optional.
Selection procedures: An informal discussion, application form completion, 2 references and a disclosure and barring check (cost met by organisation), dependent upon the role.
