High Brown Fritillary Butterfly Recorders – Vale of Glamorgan

We need volunteers to record the High Brown Fritillary, at its last remaining location in Wales, the Vale of Glamorgan. This data is used to inform decisions which help to conserve butterflies and moths, both locally and nationally. Training and guidance will be given and you will initially be accompanied by an experienced volunteer.

Our conservation work depends on us knowing how butterfly and moth populations are doing, and we are lucky to have over forty years' worth of data collected by volunteers to help us in our mission to conserve butterflies and moths.

The High Brown Fritillary’s flight period is usually in June July, during this period we conduct regular walks along identified routes called transects recording the number of High Brown Fritillaries and other butterflies seen during the walk.
It will sometimes involve accessing steep slopes and uneven ground so stout footwear is essential.
