Cardiff Eye Unit Supports Team GB with Paralympic Visual Impairment Classifications

Colleagues from Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff University and Hywel Dda University Health Board joined forces to support ParalympicsGB with the classification process for athletes ahead of the Paris 2025 Summer Paralympic Games.

On 14th June 2025, the ophthalmology department hosted its second successful Paralympic classification event for athletes with visual impairments at the Cardiff Eye Unit.

Five talented candidates from across the UK were assessed and classified for eligibility in sports such as swimming, equestrian and athletics. Classification is the process by which Paralympic athletes are placed in the most appropriate group for competition, following a detailed assessment of their impairment, that ensures fair competition across all events.

The expert classification team included:

  • Professor Joy Myint, Cardiff University School of Optometry and Vision Sciences

  • Ms Wai Siene Ng, Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon specialising in Glaucoma and Cataract, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

  • Nicky Jones, Specialist Optometrist, Hywel Dda University Health Board

  • Caz Walton OBE, former Paralympian and multiple gold medallist

  • Joshua Morgan, Classification Manager, British Association of Paralympic Athlete Services

  • Bob Walton, trusted companion and all-around handyman

Ms Wai Siene NG said: “As part of the National Paralympic Classification Team for Visual Impairment, Professor Myint and I are thankful for the continued invaluable support Cardiff and Vale University Health Board has provided in helping the British Paralympic Association to carry out classifications. Cardiff Eye Unit was selected for its excellent ophthalmic facilities and convenient location."
