Cardiff and Vale University Health Board colleagues recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List 2025

We would like to wish a huge congratulations to four colleagues, past and present, who have been recognised for their incredible services and achievements in the King’s Birthday Honours List.

Professor Meriel Jenney, Paediatric Oncologist and former Medical Director for the Health Board, has been awarded a CBE for services to cancer treatment and to research in children and young people.

Prof Jenney played a leading role in children’s cancer services in Wales for more than 20 years and led research and clinical trials on a national and international basis in childhood sarcomas and the development of measures to assess the quality of life of children who have received treatment for cancer in childhood.

Dr Roger Lloyd Morris, retired GP Partner at Llan Healthcare (Llanrumney and Llanedeyrn), has been awarded an MBE for his exceptional service to healthcare, the community and charity.

Dr Morris’ extraordinary achievements have not only made a profound impact on countless individuals but have also set a benchmark for excellence in health and social care (particularly for communities with health inequalities) in South Wales.

“I’m incredibly honoured (and a bit overwhelmed!) to receive an MBE for services to general practice and the community. This award also belongs to the amazing team I’ve worked with over the years — none of it would’ve been possible without their support, commitment, and good humour. And of course, a huge thank you to my patients, who’ve made the work so meaningful and rewarding. Since the announcement of the MBE, I have received some lovely messages from patients, colleagues and friends. I’m truly grateful”

Dr Ian Bowler, Consultant Anaesthetist, has also been awarded an MBE for his contributions to national pre-hospital emergency medicine through Medserve Wales. Dr Bowler also utilises his pre-hospital skillset to support severely affected learning difficulties patients being admitted for surgery and investigations.

“It’s very humbling to know that so many people thought that I deserved this award and it’s been amazing to receive so many messages of congratulations from friends and colleagues over the last few days. Most thanks must go to my wife Katie who deserves this award at least as much as me, without her support I would never been able to do what I have over the years.”

Tara Rees, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, has been awarded a BEM for her outstanding services to Nursing. Tara has dedicated her career to creating new services for those with specialist needs and was named RCN Wales Nurse of the Year Award in 2023 for her work to make a real difference to underrepresented patients.

“I feel truly honoured and privileged to be receiving such an award. To be given this award will not only provide opportunities to shine the light on liver disease and drive patient care, which is my passion, but to hopefully inspire nurses into and remain in the profession. I truly believe this award is a result of working with a fantastic team both locally with CAV UHB and Nationally, who have encouraged me every step of the way. I feel extremely blessed and proud.”

Suzanne Rankin, Chief Executive Officer of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said:

“I would like to extend a huge congratulations to Tara, Roger, Ian and Meriel on behalf of the Health Board on hearing the fantastic news of their recent honours.

I am delighted these colleagues are receiving the public recognition they are so deserving of, given their outstanding achievement and contribution to their respective areas of work and the people and communities they support across Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan”.

Ceri Phillips, Vice Chair of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said:

“Sincere congratulations to Roger, Ian, Tara and Meriel. These are well deserving honours and career milestones for these inspirational colleagues.

I speak on behalf of the Board when I say we are very proud of each of them and the significant contributions they have made.”
