ANCLE Café team wins 2025 John Horder Award for transforming wound care

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is proud to announce that the ANCLE Café team has been awarded the 2025 John Horder Practitioner Team Award, a prestigious national award recognising excellence in collaborative working across health and social care.

Established in memory of Dr John Horder by the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) and the Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE), this award celebrates outstanding teamwork and innovation, with a particular focus on initiatives in primary and community care.

The ANCLE (Allied Health and Nursing Collaborative Leg Engagement) Café is an initiative that was developed in partnership between Cardiff and Vale University Health Board Community Nursing Services, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the student workforce, in collaboration with the Tissue Viability and Lymphoedema services.

The ANCLE café team are working together to reimage wound care, education and workforce sustainability to improve patient outcomes while supporting the development of future Nursing and Allied Health Professionals.

The Café provides a welcoming, accessible space for patients living with chronic leg ulcers, a condition often linked to loneliness and isolation. Patients receive treatment in private NHS-standard rooms and are invited to take part in student-led activities designed to enhance their wellbeing and allow them to build connections with other patients and care givers.

Vicki Hayman-Teear, Senior Nurse in Vale Locality at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: “This achievement reflects the very best of teamwork, partnership, and patient-centred innovation here in Cardiff and Vale.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the ANCLE Café, from releasing colleagues and prioritising patients, to maintaining referral pathways and going the extra mile to cover, swap, and problem-solve during busy periods. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this success possible!”

In addition to winning this prestigious award, the ANCLE Café has also been shortlisted for this year’s NHS Wales Awards.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in this fantastic achievement!
