Barry RFC Invites Community Groups to Help Shape New All-Weather Sports Facility

Barry Rugby Football Club is progressing plans to develop a new all-weather 3G sports pitch at its Merthyr Dyfan Road ground — creating a shared, year-round community sports and wellbeing hub for Barry and the wider Vale of Glamorgan.

The proposed facility will provide a high-quality, floodlit surface suitable for rugby, football and other outdoor activities, alongside access to the club’s existing clubhouse facilities. Designed to be inclusive and community-focused, the pitch will be available not only to Barry RFC teams, but also to schools, charities, voluntary organisations, community groups and inclusive programmes.

As part of the project’s development and funding process, Barry RFC is inviting expressions of interest from organisations that could benefit from access to an all-weather pitch and indoor facilities. This is not a booking request or commitment at this stage — it is about understanding demand and ensuring the facility reflects the needs of the wider community.

Potential uses include (but are not limited to):

• School PE, after-school clubs and holiday provision
• Youth work, diversionary and alternative education programmes
• Health, wellbeing and social-prescribing activity
• Disability-inclusive and neurodivergent-friendly sessions
• Walking sport, older-people’s activity and intergenerational programmes
• Community events, volunteering and skills development

The project has already received strong support from local schools, community organisations and residents, and aims to address the current shortage of reliable, all-weather sports facilities in Barry.

Organisations interested in finding out more, or in registering their interest in future use of the pitch and clubhouse, are invited to get in touch.
