Community Cinema for rural Vale celebrates humankind with spring films

Fresh from its feel-good opening in January, the new Community Cinema for the rural Vale is set to celebrate humankind with two star-studded films in February and March.

Proudly part of LGBQT History Month and celebrating St David’s Day, joyous, historical and punchy film Pride starring Monica Dolan, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton and Dominic West features in February. Taraji P Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae star in Hidden Figures in celebration of International Women’s Day in March.

Films feature on the last Saturday of the month at the new pop-up cinema at Llantonian Hall in the centre of Llantwit Major.

Run by local volunteers, the community cinema offers super affordable films without the need to travel significant distances in the latest voluntary initiative from the first More In Common group in Wales.

February Film Night: Pride [Sat 28 Feb 2026 - certificate 15+]

Inspired by real events in 1984 linking Welsh mining communities during the Miners Strike and gay activists fighting intolerance in London, award-winning hit Pride follows as part of LGBTQ+ History Month and in honour of St David’s Day.

March Film Night: Hidden Figures [Sat 28 Mar 2026- certificate PG]

Multi-award-winning Hidden Figures celebrates the unsung trio of African- American women who crossed gender and racial lines to enable the first American to orbit the earth in 1962 - a pivotal moment in the Space Race.

Inspired by the late humanitarian Jo Cox, More in Common Llantwit Major is coordinating the pop-up cinema every month in 2026 thanks to the support of The CoOp’s Local Community Causes scheme and start-up funding from The More In Common Network, an initiative of The Jo Cox Foundation.

After establishing a free social cafe focused on connecting anyone experiencing loneliness in 2018, More in Common Llantwit Major has linked up with community groups and local organisations to foster tolerance, champion kindness and celebrate diversity, from distanced events during the pandemic to initiatives with Glamorgan Cricket and other partners through the first of the UK’s More In Common Networks in Cardiff.

Since the first Great Get Together back in 2017, the group has run more than 150 community events, including Great Get Togethers every summer and winter honouring the ‘more in common’ spirit of Jo Cox.
