Support Covid-19 Volunteering - Home-based telephone befriending

You can really make a difference to people affected by macular disease by offering them a friendly listening ear.

Volunteer befrienders aged 18+ maintain regular contact with individuals over the telephone, helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Many people that use the service like talking to a befriender who also has macular degeneration and shares their experience to help them feel more positive about their own condition.

As a befriender, you will engage your befriendee in conversations about things of general interest, as well as living with a macular condition. Using your communication and listening skills, a friendly, patient approach and an understanding of living with vision loss, you will inspire others by reducing isolation and building confidence.

You can perform this role from the comfort of your own home and we will meet any expenses for the calls you make. Training is provided in the form of a short course to complete at home, followed by a telephone conference with other volunteers.  Time commitment is negotiable with the organisation.
