Mental Health Services for Older People (MHSOP) provide dignified and respectful person centred care that meets individual needs, support choice and enhances well-being to: people with moderate to severe dementia who present with behaviour and/or psychiatric symptoms; people with severe late onset mental illness who present after the age of 65 years.
As a volunteer you would work with refocusing/activity nurses in a ward based environment within Mental Health Services for older People. Helping to develop and deliver recovery focused interventions such as Cognitive Stimulation Therapy groups, friendship groups, physical activity groups (using, among other techniques, Jabadao inspired play) and one to one support. Volunteers may also be required to assist service users to complete Patient Survey Questionnaires.
The role will involve engaging with service users who will have varying needs and levels of functioning and so will require resourceful volunteers who are confident communicators.
Time commitment: A suggested weekly time commitment of 2 hours for a minimum of 6 months. Days and hours flexible and negotiable with the organisation.
Expenses reimbursed: Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.
Training provided: Full training is provided.
Selection procedures: An informal discussion, application form completion, references and a disclosure and barring check will be required (cost met by organisation).
