Volunteer as an Appropriate Adult to safeguard the rights and civil liberties of a child or young person (under the age of 18) who is detained by the police.
The Appropriate Adult role requires volunteers aged 18+ to meet and support young people whilst in police custody. This includes ensuring police custody staff are meeting young people’s rights under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act (PACE) and to support the young person through the interview process.
Appropriate Adult volunteers will be required to attend Cardiff Bay and Bridgend Police Station and must have access to a car. Volunteers must live within the Vale of Glamorgan to participate in this opportunity.
Regular supervision is provided. Ideally looking for a time commitment of at least 1 Appropriate Adult duty per month. The volunteer will put forward their availability.
Full training is provided:
Foundation training: Saturday 28th, Sunday 29th September and Sunday 6th October – this is a mandatory element of the training programme. Also 1 day training Wednesday 30th October. There will also be a visit to the police custody suite at some point. Venue and timings to be confirmed shortly
