Opportunities are available for volunteers aged 18+ to support individuals with varying degrees of mental health problems.
Music Group Volunteer: There is a dedicated music room within our Adult Mental Health Unit, with a selection of musical instruments that require the enthusiasm and knowledge of someone with musical ability to bring them to life. Applicants do not need to have experience of teaching people to play musical instruments but only some skill and a desire to help people to enjoy making music. Staff will always be present to provide help and guidance.
To overall aim of the role is to provide some musical tuition / guidance to residents in the form of group work or one to one support. Ref 548
Pampering Group Volunteer: working with paid staff to plan a range of ‘pampering’ type services and to provide beauty treatments during weekly pampering sessions. Volunteers will use any skills that they might have in providing or advising on beauty treatments such as: manicures; nail painting; make up application or advice; and hairdressing (if qualified) to inpatients. Ref 550
Gardening Assistant: supporting staff to run a gardening group for the patients and to encourage in them an enthusiasm for gardening and a sense of ownership of these common spaces. The garden is small and enclosed. The bulk of the work involved comprises weeding, cutting back and planting. Volunteers will encourage and instruct service users in general gardening duties including: planting; weeding; watering plants; plant care; and keeping the garden clean and tidy. Volunteers are welcome to use their specialist knowledge to develop and refine the garden and will work with staff to plan weekly gardening sessions. Ref 15
Arts and Crafts Volunteer: to help paid staff to run art groups for the residents. Art sessions could involve working with a small group or could be on a one-to-one basis but will always involve teaching and encouraging people to make art in a variety of mediums. Volunteers who have experience of making art are especially welcome no matter what the medium used. Ref 185
Training is provided and travel expenses are reimbursed. The minimum weekly time commitment is 2 hours per week and is negotiable with the organisation.
