Seventy-year-old Suzie clocks up 54 years in the NHS

Could Suzie Curtin be our longest-serving member of staff? Medical secretary Suzie, who works in the gynaecology directorate office at the University of Wales in Cardiff, has an incredible 54 years’ service in the NHS. At 70, she is the same age as the NHS.

NHS70: marking 70 years of the National Health Service

On 5 July 1948, Health Minister Aneurin Bevan, walked into Park Hospital in Manchester to launch the National Health Service. The hospital, now called Trafford General Hospital, was a symbol of the ambitious plan to make healthcare available to everyone, which would be free at the point of use and paid for out of general taxation.
